Newsfeeds are done!
Thhhp! ![]()
The newsfeeds are in place, and hopefully fairly stable. It has been a labor of … love(?) to get them up and running. I almost killed both the new security site and my existing Champions RPG site in the process of adding these links. But, in the end, pure pigheadedness and … well, just pigheadedness, won out over the vageries of technology.
First of all, if you want to add your own newsfeed to a site, you are going to need a good HowTo. I used Dean McKenzies. Learn from my mistakes and read the whole thing before you go installing the software. One problem I had that isn’t covered in Dean’s excellent HowTo is a conflict between the mt-rebuild.cgi that comes with Movable Type and the one that comes with the RSS feed plugin. I was locked out of the Web portion of the site for several hours while I troubleshot the process. I’m not sure if the plugin version of mt-rebuild.cgi is better or not, but I decided it was causing me problems and had to go.
I plan on working on this some more tomorrow, but for now I have the Security News Portal and Slashdot feeds. That should be enough to start with.
By the way, if you add target=”_blank” to the template, you open the newsfeed in a new window. Not to everyone’s liking, but this is how I like to do it.
