Hot on the trail of …

My sites have been down more than up over the last three days, and I think I finally have the problem on the ropes. I’ve learned a lot while troubleshooting my own network the last several days, and one thing it has taught me is that proximity in time does not mean linkage in causality. In other words, just because two (or more) incidents happen at the same time, doesn’t mean that they have to be related in any way. Basically, what I thought might be a hack attempt against my server turned out to be a hub failing. Several IDS alerts that started about the same time as the hardware issues led me on a wild goose chase for a few days. Now that I’ve replaced the hub with a much smaller, brand new version, my computers are all happy and talking again.
