Feeling better, Trackback spam and Failed Hard Drives
Well, I’m on the road to recovery, after having spent the last several days battling an upper respiratory thingy (technical term). Ahh, the joys of having children who are in school where they can get all these wonderful illnesses. I subscribe to the theory that by having some of these illnesses while they’re young they’ll have a better immune system when they’re older, but why do they have to share with me?
I suffered a bout of trackback spam late last night and early this morning, but I think I have it all cleaned out by now. This morning’s infestation was all for online gambling sites, which I don’t find nearly as offensive as the porn sites. In any case, if you happen to see a trackback I missed, please bring it to my attention. The good news is that last months changes to the comment system seem to be holding up.
Finally, I got a call from home yesterday morning saying that something in my office was beeping. I could still get to the web server and other outward facing services, so I told my wife I’d deal with it when I got home. Well, it turns out that the brand new file server I’d just built has a bad hard drive. Maxtor’s RMA process is fairly painless, even though they do require a credit card number to ship you a replacement before you ship them the defective drive. With all the problems I’ve had building this server, I’m beginning to wonder if I shouldn’t have sacrificed a few drops of blood to the computer gods during the build. Its not good when your file backup server has a bad hard drive. I may have to switch over to mirrored SATA drives on this system. Or just abandon the system all together. Sigh.
