The power of a blog

I know this has nothing to do with security, but I feel this is another instance of a company doing everything it can to garner negative publicity. Basicly, it sounds like the Quick Boys moving company in Toronto did a bad job helping a friend of the blogger’s move, and the friend posted comments about the company on the blog. So far, no big deal. Then the company starts calling the blogger, threatening him if he doesn’t take the comments down. Now the story is all over the Net.

Cisco and ISS are currently suffering through a similar issue with Michael Lynn: the very act of trying to get the information about the Cisco exploit silenced is what caused such a huge outcry in the Internet community. If they’d let Mr. Lynn give his presentation, there would have been several online comments about it, then it would have been back to business as usual. Instead they’ve created a huge uproar and inspired hackers everywhere to figure out how to recreate this exploit themselves. Not to mention the huge amount of negative publicity both Cisco and ISS have garnered themselves.

Note to Quick Boys and Cisco: Don’t threaten bloggers, or anyone who has a presence on the Internet. It’s going to hurt you at least as much as it hurts them.
