Podcasting
This is from my local newspaper, The Press Democrat. I’d realized that Leo Laporte lived in the northern Bay Area, but I hadn’t realized how close he really was until recently.
I only discovered the Podcasting phenomena about two weeks ago myself. I’ve been toying with the idea of starting my own, but it feels too much like a ‘me too’ sort of thing. The other problem I have is that a lot of the podcasts I’ve seen so far aren’t much more than an audio version of a link blog. That is, they’re just rehashing other people’s news stories. I do that too much on the blog already.
Leo Laporte’s got his This Week in Tech podcast, and his new Security Now! cast with Steve Gibson. Are there any other computer security related podcasts out there? There’s 2600 and a couple of other hacker-related podcasts, but that’s not what I want to listen to.
What do you think: would it be worth it to do a 30 minute podcast on current security events once every week or two? Is there someone out there, besides Leo, already doing this? One possibility that comes to mind for me is enlisting the help of a couple other security professionals I’ve corresponded with via email, but have never met. With the burgeoning VoIP products out there, it would be easy to do a podcast with people all over the world. The only stumbling block I have is that I hate the sound of my own voice once it’s been recorded.

Martin, I think it would be a good idea as there is plenty of room for growth in the “security podcasting” market
I have enjoyed the two Security Now! podcasts, and I also started listening to Curt Franklin’s security podcast at http://www.networkcomputing.com (look for security channel under blogs).
Sometimes *hearing* what people have to say rather than reading seems to work really well. Plus your listeners can play an episode in the background while doing other work, or invite others into the room and listen as a group.
A security podcast certainly presents a target-rich environment. While at Email Battles the focus is on email, we are inevitably drawn into firewalls, routers, Windows registry, Windows patches, Windows this, Windows that… blah, blah, blah…
All roads lead to security.

It took some digging, but I finally managed to find the Security Channel on their site. http://www.networkcomputing.com/blog/archives
/channel_blog_security/index.html. (Sorry, I had to wrap the URL)
There were several links on the site that were broken, and a search of the site somehow failed to turn up Mr. Franklin’s name. Oh well.
I’ll try listening to the podcast tomorrow on my way into work.
I love Security Now! I’m still looking for more edgy security that is more proactive (i.e. 0day, gray hat stuff).
Security Now! is the only podcast I have found worth listening to, but it usually only touches on one maybe two topical subjects. It would be nice to take the ISN Security News digest and do a “Digest Podcast”, going over say the top ten events that occured in a week and getting various people around the globe to Skype or GoogleTalk in with comments. This will save lots of time for those who spend a lot of time on trains or cars or planes and can listen to the podcasts and not have to trawl through blogs or news digests to keep up with whats going on.
So to answer your question, I say GO FOR IT!
