Basically my main desktop died (either PSU of mobo, not sure at this point), and my last backup was a few months old. I bought a new laptop and a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002 I only received the adapter yesterday, but it was about as painless as could be to begin getting the data off my old hard drive within 15 minutes. This approach may work for you if you haven't figured something else out yet. What is nice about that particular style of adapter is you don't need to remount the hard drive anywhere, just take off the case, hook up the hard drive on one end and the USB adapter to the computer you want to back up to. It will show up as an external USB hard drive. Works on Linux beautifully too (went from a Debian desktop to an Ubuntu laptop). I recently had a similar situation of almost data loss.
