I agree, a fourth makes this "look" less and less like coincidence. I didn't know a fourth had been cut until I read your post. I saw a SANS posting the other week on the cuts, and one of the points the post made was that the backup cables could be failing due to a (major) increase in usage now that the main cable is down.

It looks like the fourth one wasn't cut so much as it has power problems that are making it very flaky. Before I get serious about this being a conspiracy, I want to know what someone would gain from cutting the Middle East off from the Internet? I can imagine that some of the countries affected would be perfectly happy if their citizens never got Internet access again, but no so much that they'd be willing to cut these cables themselves.

The first repair ship should be arriving today. While I doubt we'll get the whole truth as to what really happened, it should be interesting to read the stories coming from the repair ship.

Slashdot reports a fourth cable cut in less than a week. http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/04/0158249 Increasingly looks like there might be something to your conspiracy theory. :)

Thumbing through Google News it looks like the first two, off Alexandria, Egypt, were broken by possibly a single anchor dropped in the wrong place. But Egyptian authorities are apparently denying this, saying it was a no-go area and review of video shows no ships in the area when the cut occurred; Khalleej Times article.

I don't see any explanation for the third, 56km off Dubai.

And now a fourth connecting Qatar and the UAE has reportedly been cut between Haloul and Das. See http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5i03tUdyj8wf2Xa9P4trWEjqAJdyQ

It will be interesting to see what's going on.
