MikeP,

It was a double post, but thanks to the awesome power granted to me as the administrator of the site, I deleted the first one. I also turn on moderation, so you usually wouldn't see a post for at least an hour or two.

One of the things I find funny is that the thread that got me to write this post has now gone far afield from the question originally asked. A more focused question would have helped, but probably not too much given the crowd on that particular list.

I tried Tim Horton's when I was in Montreal in February. The coffee is okay, the donuts are decent, but I'm not a big donut fan to begin with. Or more accurately, I like donuts a lot, but my waistline doesn't. I'd try a Dunkin Donut too if there were any around. This morning I'd settle for a Noah's Bagel.

Yep, that's why I tend to prefer subscribing to announce-only lists, although the MacPorts one stays on topic usually quite well.

I used to wonder what all the old farts on mailing lists were complaining about. Now I know; I complain about people who are like I was in my late teens/early 20s. La plus que change and all that.

Making questions specific enough to be answered is a skill, no doubt about it, and one which even academics (who presumably have 20 or 30 years of practise) can sometimes fail it. Is it any wonder that so many others do?

Furthermore, everybody knows Tim's beats Dunkin' hands down. What's to discuss?

(Hm, sorry if this is a double post. It doesn't look like the first one went through, no doubt thanks to NoScript.)

I've seen those links sent out before, but I try to be a little more constructive and remind people to ask the questions they really want answered. Though there have be occasions when someone is being especially obstinate and the Google link is the most appropriate. But usually I just put those people on my 'ignore' list anyways.

What really bugs me is the people who complain about the signal to noise ratio on a list but become part of the noise rather than becoming part of the signal. But that's a post for another day.

This has been a familiar link when a very vague question has been asked on some of the mailing lists that I am on:

http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

and to a lessor extent:
